Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a unique approach to catechesis of the child. We become humble instruments of the Holy Spirit as we present God’s message of love. The space where we do this work ("the Atrium") is thoughtfully curated and designed to meet the developmental needs of the child. This approach is well-suited to a child’s innate sense of learning, especially children with different learning needs. An invitation to receive love is very effective in setting the foundation for a life of Faith. Catechists often express that they receive so many gifts and graces from this work, which is why many are steadfastly dedicated to this program.
Catechists volunteer on one day per week. Expect to devote three hours of time on that day – 30 minutes preparing before the session, the 2-hour session, and 30 minutes or less for cleanup. Our sessions begin mid-September and finish in early May.
All Catechists must pass a background check before working with the children, complete Safe Environment training, and abide by the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Denver.
CGS is experiencing growing demand, especially in the Front Range. In order to serve the needs of our families, we need Catechists!
The CGS training always begins with Level I, which is for ages 3-6. Often this process is described as a “bud to flower” or “spiral method”. Once a Catechist receives Level I certification, they may proceed to Level II (ages 6-9) and then Level III (ages 9-12).

From a Catechist with over two decades of experience:
"We listen to the Good Shepherd with the children which enriches our lives. In a way, we are catechists because it is for us! Also there are beautiful bonds of friendship that develop between catechists. When attending the training, I felt it was like a retreat, a time for me to spend with God and listen to his voice. Because the method is so good, most adults wonder why they hadn’t received instruction in the faith in such a deep and personal way. Even making materials becomes a joy because it is like a prayer we create with our hands. Being a catechist is not like being a teacher. The children have their own relationship with Jesus they share with us. I hope more people of all ages desire to share in the blessings of CGS."
