ELEMENTARY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
SACRED HEART OF MARY CHURCH

Schedule for 2009-2010

Sacred Heart of Mary accepts our parish responsibility for providing religious education for all of our children.  The Religious Education Ministry recognizes the parent as the Primary Educator of the children and seeks to assist the parents with religious education as mandated by the Church.
Religious Education experiences and instruction shall be provided to students with inclusion and communication with parents and families, while appreciating the uniqueness and individuality of the learning process.  We see parental and family involvement to complement and strengthen the formal education and activities provided by the parish.

We will be using the Faith & Life series by Ignatius Press.  This series present Catholic teaching using time-tested methods of catechesis and faith formation, in a beautiful, student-friendly, comprehensive format.  This exciting presentation of Catholicism is tailored for grades 1-5.  Children have a 15 minute music class where they spend time singing Mass songs.

The emphasis for Year 1 Introduction to the Holy Trinity through presentations on God the Father, the life of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God’s plan of salvation and our part in that plan, especially in the Church.  Acquaints children with Mary, the angels, and the saints.  Children learn basic prayers.
The emphasis for Year 2 Preparation for the first reception of the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion, with the law of God and salvation history as background.  The lessons emphasize God’s mercy and love.  The curriculum covers creation, the covenant with Moses, the Ten Commandments, redemption, forgiveness of sins, and the Mass.
The emphasis for Year 3 God’s plan of salvation, from Creation to the Incarnation and Redemption, to the birth of the Church at Pentecost and our life in the Church.  Special emphasis is placed on the importance of the Sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist, and the Mass.
The emphasis for Year 4 God’s plan to save his people from sin (salvation history), how we participate in that plan, and the many ways God helps us in our pilgrimage on earth to heaven through his Word, his law, and his Church.
The emphasis for Year 5 A thorough study of the articles of the Creed as the basic elements of our Catholic Faith, with a special emphasis on careful understanding of definitions through the words of the Gospel, the prophets, and the prayers of the Church.
